Schemes and Missions to Improve Breed of Cattles (Important)
Milk production increased by 6.27% per annum during last three years. During the last decade milk production has increased by 4% per annum. As per breed survey report 2012 the country has 37.92 million animals of indigenous cattle breeds and 23.78 million animals of indigenous cattle breeds during 2007.
To supplement the efforts for conservation of indigenous breeds Government of India has initiated following programs:
Rashtriya Gokul Mission
- Launched December 2014 for the development and conservation of indigenous bovine breeds thereby enhancing milk production and productivity
- Enhance milk production & productivity through induction of high genetic merit bulls for semen production, field performance recording, strengthening of bulls mother farms, and setting up of Gokul Grams
National Mission on Bovine Productivity
- National Mission on Bovine Productivity implemented for enhancing milk production and productivity of bovine population
- Aim to make dairying more remunerative to the farmers.
Components
National Mission on Bovine Productivity scheme has following components
- Pashu Sanjivni includes identification of animals in milk using UID, issuing health cards to all animals in milk and uploading data on INAPH data base
- Advance reproductive Technique providing sex sorted semen production facility at 10 A graded semen stations and 50 Embryo Transfer Technology Labs with IVF facilities
- Creation of E Pashu Haat Portal for linking farmers and breeders of indigenous breeds
- Establishment of National Bovine Genomic Centre for Indigenous Breeds NBGC-IB for enhancing milk production and productivity through genomic selection among indigenous breeds.
National Programme for Bovine Breeding
- Extension of Artificial Insemination (AI) coverage through establishment of Multi Purpose AI Technicians in Rural India (MAITRIs), strengthening of existing AI centres, and monitoring of AI⟋
- Breed Improvement Institutes.
National Kamdhenu Breeding Centres
Two centers being established in Andhra Pradesh for southern region and in Madhya Pradesh for northern
National Dairy Plan-I
It is a world Bank assisted project being implemented in 18 major dairy States for:
- Enhancing milk production and productivity to meet demand
- Strengthening of semen station
- Bull production program (progeny testing and pedigree selection)
- Ration balancing program.
Other Organizations
Government has established three subordinate organizations for genetic upgradation of milch animals through supply of disease free high genetic merit bulls for semen production and natural service:
- Central Cattle Breeding Farms (CCBFs)
- Central Herd registration Scheme
- Central Frozen Semen Production & Training Institute.
